What we will not claim
A free call, yes. A free session or a first-month discount, never.
AI-generated illustration. Not a real office.
A licensed professional in New York may offer no bonus or inducement except a reduction of an established fee, and in New York City a discount needs a price the business actually charged. So the fees here are printed once, in full, with the dates they apply, and the only thing that is free is a short call that is not a session.
What you will see advertised
“First session free! Half off your first month of therapy — this week only.”
Quoted in order to be refused: this practice never says it, and the rest of this page says why.
Why a practice says it, and why it misleads
A first session at no charge, or a reduction for the first month, lowers the cost of trying, and a deadline gives a hesitant reader a reason to act today.
It misleads because a first therapy session is not a sample. It is real work, with a real hour set aside for a real person, and a clinician who gives it away has priced it as something else. A reduction means something only against a price the practice actually charged before, and a crossed-out figure or a countdown asks the reader to decide quickly about something that deserves a slow decision.
So the fees here are printed once, in full, with the dates they apply. The one thing that costs nothing is a short call, and the call says on its face that it is not a session.
What the law says
As it read in October 2026.
A licensed professional may not offer a bonus or inducement in any form other than a reduced fee (8 NYCRR § 29.1(b)(12)).
A percent-off or reduced price must be measured against a price the business actually charged the public before (6 RCNY § 5-91).
Where a range of prices is stated or implied, by "from", "starting at" or "and up", the highest price is printed as large as the lowest (6 RCNY § 5-12).
- 8 NYCRR § 29.1(b)(12) (opens the source in a new tab) A licensed professional may not advertise in a way that is false or misleading, guarantees a service, makes a claim it cannot substantiate, claims superiority, or offers a bonus or inducement other than a reduced fee.
